about

'Permanent Limbo was written in 2019 and was originally inspired by a long distance relationship that broke down while I was touring almost continuously with All Our Exes Live in Texas. It was recorded in Sydney with Josh Pyke and Luke Moseley (Butternut Sweetheart) as co-producers and mixed in LA by Tony Buchen (Montaigne, The Preachers etc). Luke and I performed all the musical elements on the track. It was one of those blissful recording sessions where everything moved easily and logically and there was a sense of excitement in the studio.

During the course of this long distance relationship, technology was the only thing keeping us together but it was simultaneously making us feel more alone in our separate lives.
Fast forward to 2020 when the pandemic hit and our entire lives moved online. For most of us the internet became our only source of connection. We were all in a 'permanent limbo' of sorts - especially those of us who rely on touring live music to make our living and, in many cases, to fulfil our emotional needs.
In the midst of recording the song I had an idea for an accompanying music video. It was essentially about the merging of humans and technology - the many pitfalls and wonders of this emerging industry.  I decided to reach out to a Melbourne based artist that I came across who made beautiful caricatures of robots and cats and dogs. I approached the Melbourne artist 'Luna Tunes' and asked him if he would be interested in making a music video for my song. He said 'yes' and we set about bringing his beautiful colourful robot characters to life. The story shifted again and the result is an incredibly optimistic depiction of robots steadily gaining intelligence, personality and enlightenment, all while going about their domestic chores in their houses.
I am so excited about this release because it's fun and danceable but it has its roots in a story of love and loss. It was cathartic to write and it will be cathartic to release and share during this moment of historic uncertainty.
It is a danceable electronic pop anthem to accompany the merging of humans and technology and potentially the end of life as we know it.

lyrics

What did you think would happen
With one foot in and one foot out?

Bringing love and lives together
That’s what it’s really all about

We could have made it honey
We could have really stepped right out
If you met me halfway baby
If I wasn’t married to the sound

Remember Sunday morning
Before it all got hard
Crosswords in the cafe
Making plans for our lives that stretched right out

You went back to Melbourne
We packed the car and we drove down
Albury Woodonga’s halfway
slept in the park the on the ground

We could have made it honey
We could have really stepped right out
If you met me halfway baby
If I wasn’t married to the sound

CHORUS:
NOW WE’RE IN PERMANENT LIMBO
NOW WE’RE A SOUNDBITE ON A CLOUD
I CAN’T SEE YOUR PHOTO
I CAN’T EVEN CALL YOUR NAME OUT LOUD

What did you think would happen?
Living so far apart
Making love on a digital platform
Making plans for our lives that never start

CHORUS

Call your name out loud (repeated)
